Japanese music retreat 1977
All the kimono ladies are koto players a Japanese horizontal harp with a very clear tone. This was taken at the base of Mt Fuji in Shizuoka. Sitting front and center is the late Ranpo Yokoyama-Sensei, reknowned as a superior Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) maker, whose flutes are highly prized. He is Katsuya Yokoyama's father.

That is Eliot Kaplan standing next to me. He lived on Gordon rd. but went to private school so maybe not that many of you knew him. I used to live on Gordon rd. before moving to Newton Center.

Excellent stuff
ReplyDeleteamazing, really.
Paul turned me on to shakuhachi when he visited us in June of 2001. It's a challenging instrument but I enjoy it.

ReplyDeleteI like studying pictures like this because sometimes I imagine from the facial expressions and other things what was going on at the exact moment the picture was taken.
ReplyDeletePhotography has that going for it.
In this case, the imperious Paul stands chin up right behind the cutest (and most appropriate age) ladies of the bunch, who seem to be trying not to giggle for some reason. I think Paul said something to get them going the moment before the shutter snapped.
